Personal Practices: Sound | Vibration

Chanting is simply the rhythmic repetition of a word or phrase, with or without melody. Although mainly a spiritual practice, it has been adapted as a secular relaxation practice, because of its demonstrated physiological effects. Chanting can be done as a personal practice, and also takes on an added dimension in groups.

RESOURCES: For more information about the science behind the "relaxation response" and practices for achieving it, see The Mind Body Medical Institute founded by Herbert Benson, MD, and his colleagues at the Harvard Medical School.

To explore other chanting traditions, look for audio and video programs on chanting, mantra, and sacred sound available in bookstores and in online catalogs.
