Personal Practices: Silence
Doing a Voice Fast

Keeping silent for a day, or a weekend, or even longer, can be a powerful personal practice. It is not as easy as you might think!

Many retreat centers, both those affiliated with a specific denomination and those offering learning and experiential activities to the general public, have structured opportunities to experience an extended period of silence.

If you choose to experiment in your own home, disconnect or turn off phones and email devices. If necessary, let family members and friends know you will be unavailable for a period of time. You might find it easier to rent a cabin in the woods or a beach house, stock it with food, and enjoy your silence in solitude. Bring a journal to record your experience and reflect on it.
